Practising is vital to make any progress on your instrument. James' mum grabbed this photo in the middle of his practice session and timed it perfectly to capture his goldfish watching his music practice. :) This made me wonder, how do our pets respond to our music practice? And more importantly for James; "Can Goldfish hear music? " A quick check to Google and I check the site TrueAquarium.com which tells me that goldfish can hear sounds, they do not have the same hearing range as humans. In fact, goldfish can hear only low-frequency sounds. Typically, a goldfish has the ability to hear sounds in the range between 50Hz and 3000Hz. In comparison, we humans can hear sounds from 20 Hz to 20,000 Hz. So, your aquatic pet will probably not hear the sound of a police whistle. However, goldfish can clearly hear any low-frequency sounds, such as, tapping on the water tank and sounds of footsteps.
So the answer is yes, they can hear you practising and can differentiate between musical styles. A further search brings me to the site Pets on Mom there is an account of a recent experiment where scientists trained goldfish to eat from a food ball while the classical music of Bach played in the background. Later, they switched Bach out for the more modern Stravinsky, and the goldfish didn’t touch their food ball. This suggests that they could tell the difference between the music of the two composers and had come to associate Bach with the reward they got from the food ball.
