What to expect with an online lessons.

Updated: Aug 4, 2020

Lessons are one to one, with a member of our team of teachers. You will have the same teacher for each lesson. (except in illness).

All Music Academy teachers are EDBS checked and have completed an annual safe guarding course. All our full time tutors have qualifications from teaching diploma upwards. It is recognised that qualifications are not enough to maintain a high standard of teaching so a full in house professional development program is available for all tutors to maintain and increase their personal standards.

Graded examinations for those who would like to participate and have the relevant standards are available. Online examinations via recorded or live sessions are available for practical exams and theory exams would be taken at a centre local to the area you live in. These are available globally with the ABRSM, LCM, Trinity Guildhall, Rockschool, MTB exams or Victoria College.

The online lesson is automatically booked on Zoom. This means that, for most lessons, an optional mp4 recording is available. This provides an excellent resource for you to refer back to during the week.

We have found by trial and error that lessons on Zoom are of better picture quality and clarity of sound. You do not need to share your contact details with us, we will email you a link and password from which you can log in via your browser.

However if you would prefer to use a different service please let us know by email and we will amend the booking accordingly.

Your tutor will email you in advance regarding your current standard and any requirements you have or music you would like to study. At this stage please confirm if you are a complete beginner or your level of experience. If you have any music you are currently working on and need help please include the name of the piece, publisher, composer and current ability level. If you have a recording of a recent performance please send the URL to info@stalybridgemusicacademy.com

On the day we recommend a headset with microphone for the best result but many devices have acceptable facilities built in. You will need a good view of your instrument and any music we have emailed to you. Music can be viewed as a PDF on a tablet, phone, desktop or any other device. We only use copyright free music that is available on IMSLP, to download from the web or has been composed for our students.

You are welcome to print it out if you prefer a paper copy.

Lesson times are UK times, please be aware of this when you book your lesson.
